An early 6 AM start today! We were heading to a small village called Ziway about 3 hours away from the capital so we wanted to leave as early as possible to try avoid the manic Addis Ababa rush hour traffic. There were delays along the way (as always in Africa), but despite the early start we still had time to do our usual morning dancing routine!
Our cars were filled with two mobile dental units, two portable ultrasonic scalers, one intraoral x-ray machine and a lot of dental materials. Our aim for today was helping the people who lives in the rural areas in Ethiopia as most people in these areas do not have access to basic dental care and the majority have never seen a dentist prior to our visit.
We started our day at Ziway hospital where they have a dental department with only one dental chair. Within 10 minutes of our arrival we had set up our portable dental clinic at the location. We carried out screenings and dental treatments for many patients. These included amongst others fillings, extractions and scaling. We later went to Ziway federal prison where we carried out treatments for the prisoners. The hygiene standard at the prison and the oral health of the prisoners were both poor so we realised early that there was a big need for our service.
«Each patient also received a thorough oral health education session where we informed, motivated and instructed them in how to keep their teeth and gums healthy»
The day was overall amazing and we all felt that we managed to help a lot of people that otherwise would have had to live with severe dental pain. Each patient also recieved a thorough oral health education session where we informed, motivated and instructed them in how to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
